The University of Medicine and Health Sciences is pleased to announce that it has earned the renewal of its full accreditation from the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) for a maximum period of six years and a five-year accreditation from the St. Kitts Accreditation Board.
These accreditations follow two rigorous site visits over the past 12 months, during which both governing bodies provided excellent feedback. Their reports praised the strength of UMHS’s academic programs, the dedication of its senior administration and faculty to delivering high-quality education, and the comprehensive student support services that ensure success. These achievements further solidify UMHS’s status as a top-tier Caribbean medical school committed to excellence.
“We are honored by this recognition and proud of the tireless dedication of our faculty, staff, and students to maintaining the highest standards of medical education,” said Warren Ross, President of UMHS. “These achievements are the result of the collective efforts of our entire community — from the Basic Science Program in St. Kitts, to the Maine Integrated Program, and throughout our Clinical Program. We remain committed to our mission of supporting student success and delivering a top-quality medical education.”
The ACCM, which adopts U.S. accreditation standards as its benchmark, conducted a rigorous peer-review process that evaluated all aspects of the UMHS medical education program, including curriculum design, faculty qualifications, facilities, and student outcomes. ACCM accreditation — recognized by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) — enables UMHS graduates to pursue residency training and licensure in the United States.
Both ACCM and the St. Kitts Accreditation Board commended UMHS for meeting nearly all accreditation standards, underscoring the university’s academic rigor, experienced faculty, and robust student support systems.
“At UMHS, we take the accreditation process very seriously, viewing it not just as validation of our academic excellence, but as an opportunity to grow even stronger,” said Ross. “We carefully consider all recommendations for improvement and use them to enhance our medical education and student experience further. Our commitment to continuous improvement ensures that we always strive to deliver the best education possible.”
In addition to these accreditations, UMHS has secured a renewed one-year approval from the Commission for Independent Education (CIE), part of the Florida Department of Education. The CIE oversees the approval of both U.S. and international schools. This renewal allows UMHS to continue its partnerships with teaching hospitals in Florida, expanding opportunities for students to gain valuable clinical training and hands-on experience that prepare them for competitive residency placements.
UMHS is dedicated to producing skilled, compassionate physicians prepared to meet the demands of a global healthcare system. Its small class sizes, personalized attention, and state-of-the-art facilities ensure that students receive a top-tier medical education supported by individualized guidance and resources.
