It gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Edwin Purcell (pictured, top photo) as the Dean of Basic Sciences. As many of you know, Dr. Purcell has been part of the UMHS family for many years serving as both the Chairman and Professor of Anatomy as well as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Dr. Purcell has a wide range of academic and administrative experience working at several US medical and osteopathic medical schools over the last 30 years. His background and experience will continue to ensure that the university will grow in stature and reputation for years to come. Dr. Purcell is dedicated to providing our students with the highest quality education possible. His commitment to the students is well known, and his collegial and professional manner will serve him well in his role as Dean.
On another note, I would like to thank Dr. Camacho for his years of dedication and commitment to UMHS. We know he had a great love for the students, faculty, and administration, and we wish him the best as he enters the next phase of his life.

Built in the tradition of the best US universities, the University of Medicine and Health Sciencesfocuses on individual student attention, maintaining small class sizes and recruiting high-quality faculty. We call this unique approach, “personalized medical education,” and it’s what has led to our unprecedented 96% student retention rate, and outstanding residency placements across the US and Canada. UMHS is challenging everything you thought you knew about Caribbean medical schools.
