Physiology—the study of such living organisms as tissues, organs and cells—is an essential course in medical school. UMHS student and Physiology TA Milagros Ivette Rivera Cora talks about how to do well in Physiology and more in Dextrocardia Podcast Episode 15.

Milagros Ivette Rivera Cora, also known as Mila, is from Puerto Rico. She is a second-year medical student at UMHS, and is also a student ambassador and mentor. Prior to medical school, she obtained her B.S. in chemistry and minor in medical humanities at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras, where she researched in organic chemistry. She volunteered in the ER of Hospital San Francisco (HSF) and then volunteered abroad for a month in Cusco, Perú. She has shadowed a surgical oncologist and an OB/GYN.

Milagros worked as secretary of the Surgery Department in HSF and then as Assistant of Behavioral Analysis Program in Homestead Behavioral Clinic. Her exposure has allowed her to develop a passion for volunteer work, and thus she aspires to join Doctors Without Borders in the future. In order to get there, she practices mindfulness daily by meditating, doing yoga and writing.

Milagros is also a published author. She worked with Edith Esparza-Young, Ph.D., UMHS Associate Professor of Learning Development and Language Skills, in collaboration with authors from Oyster Adams Bilingual School in Washington, DC and Stanford University in California, on the recently published “The Power of a Doodling Brain: Concept Maps as Pathways to Learning” in Education Quarterly Reviews on the Asian Institute of Research site.

Dextrocardia features interviews with fellow medical students, medical school faculty, and medical practitioners on everything from how to succeed in medical school, to fighting racial inequality in medicine and how medical students are working in the BLM (Black Lives Matter) movement.

Episodes are released every other Tuesday. Dextrocardia is available on Apple Podcast, Spotify and Podbean.
