We are pleased to announce that the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) has granted to the University of Medicine and Health Sciences a full six-year accreditation. ACCM is an internationally recognized accrediting body that has adopted the Liaison Committee of Medical Education (LCME) Standards for Accreditation. The LCME has been empowered by the U.S Department of Education to accredit both U.S. and Canadian Medical Schools. As a result of this accreditation, UMHS’ recognition and credibility, as well as our reputation throughout the United States and Canada, will be substantially enhanced.
ACCM is also closely aligned with the National Committee of Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA). The NCFMEA has been empowered by the U.S. Department of Education to review both written and applied accreditation standards for medical schools outside of the United States and Canada. ACCM is approved by NCFMEA and is recognized as having standards comparable to U.S. standards. ACCM will be forwarding their accreditation report directly to NCFMEA for their consideration.
As a medical university, UMHS has made great strides in a short period of time in terms of increasing our reputation as the quality choice for a Caribbean medical education. With this accreditation in place, we can now focus on obtaining additional state approvals which will further enhance our reputation and enable additional clinical and residency opportunities.
Earlier this year, UMHS became the first foreign medical school to receive approval under the State of Georgia’s new standards. We also submitted our New York State application last December, and we are now in the queue for a future site visit. In the near future, we will also be applying for Florida approval, followed by others in our quest to expand professional and educational opportunities for UMHS students and graduates.
