A New Medical School Option for Canadian Students

NEW YORK, Oct 16, 2012 With growing concern over a projected shortage of primary care physicians and internists, and the limited number of available seats in U.S. and Canadian medical schools, the question of how to expand options for qualified prospects for medical school, looms large in the minds of those charged with educating the next generation of physicians. The University of Medicine and Health Sciences, St. Kitts (UMHS) and Carleton University of Ottawa, Ontario are joining forces to meet this challenge head on.

Thanks to a new articulation agreement between these institutions, Canadian students’ options have increased.  Carleton students will now be offered an educational track that will qualify them for consideration for a seat in a future UMHS class, provided they meet or surpass certain minimum standards and requirements.  This agreement comes at a time when a fraction of qualified Canadian students who apply to medical school are accepted into Canadian institutions (25%).

“By partnering with Carleton University, which does not have a medical school of its own, we will offer one of the most robust program options available," says Michelle Peres, Vice-President of Enrollment Management for UMHS, a Caribbean medical school headquartered in New York City.  "Our program is rooted in our history of building quality educational institutions and graduating top-notch doctors in every field of medicine."

“What distinguishes us, not just from other Caribbean medical schools, but most medical schools, is that we care about our students, period.” says Earl Mainer, UMHS, Senior Associate Director of Admissions.  “Carleton believes in making the best options available for its students and UMHS continues that philosophy from application to graduation.”

UMHS President, Warren Ross sites other specific highlights that set the school apart:

"Our record speaks for itself. We have one of the most state of the art campuses in the Caribbean that compares to the best medical schools in the United States.  Our faculty, recruited primarily from Canada and the United States, are fully dedicated to the success of their students.  We maintain the highest of academic standards and are proud to announce a 97% pass rate on USMLE in 2012. "

“Though admission to UMHS is not guaranteed, this agreement does set the stage for the consideration of Carleton University Science students. We hope the agreement will help attract medical school minded freshmen to Carleton by offering them a BSc High School Direct Entry Program, and an Honors BSc Final Year Direct Entry Program at UMHS”, says Dwight Deugo, Assistant Dean of Science at Carleton University.
