The Importance of Match Day
Match Day marks the culmination of a rigorous and highly competitive residency placement process through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). On this day, graduating medical students across the United States and Canada learn where they will continue their training as resident physicians.
UMHS students have proudly participated in the residency Match each year since 2011, achieving a 93% overall residency placement rate across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. These outcomes reflect the strength of our academic preparation, personalized faculty mentorship, and dedicated residency advising support.

Dr. Laecio Rocha '21 on surgical obstetrics fellowship in Seattle
Laecio Rocha, MD, MHA, MPH is a 2021 UMHS graduate currently completing a one-year surgical obstetrics fellowship at Providence Everett Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington. Raised in a small town in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, he moved to the United States at age 17.
Dr. Alexandra Bloss '25 on preliminary surgery residency in OH
Dr. Alexandra Bloss is a UMHS Class of 2025 graduate who started a preliminary general surgery residency at the Jewish Hospital—Mercy Health in Cincinnati, Ohio, this summer. She applied to 20 U.S. medical schools but was denied, and ultimately chose to attend UMHS.
Dr. Nicole Outten: From nontraditional student to family med resident
Dr. Nicole Outten ’25 grew up in Florida and initially wanted to be a mother and teacher before deciding to pursue medicine at age seven after breaking her arm. She completed her undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary natural sciences at the University of South Florida, hoping to attend medical school.
Dr. Josean Reyes Flores '25 on internal med residency at UPR
Dr. Josean Reyes Flores, a 2025 UMHS grad, recently started his internal medicine residency at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Originally from Moca in Puerto Rico, Dr. Reyes Flores was inspired to pursue medicine by his grandfather, who was an internal medicine physician.
University of Medicine and Health Sciences Celebrates Historic Match Day for Graduating Students
In 2025, UMHS graduates earned residency placements across all six core specialties: internal medicine, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, pediatrics, and surgery. They also matched into highly sought-after specialties, including anesthesiology, emergency medicine, neurology, diagnostic radiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and transitional year programs.
Dr. Martin Tarzian on psychiatry residency in OH
Dr. Martin Tarzian, a UMHS 2023 graduate, discusses his upcoming 2024 residency in psychiatry at MetroHealth in Cleveland, Ohio. He said he initially wanted to be a surgeon but found his passion for psychiatry during a rotation in Danbury, Connecticut. He was inspired by the way patients with mental health issues communicated and spoke passionately about their experiences.
Dr. Angelica Marrero on dermatology fellowship in FL
Dr. Angelica Marrero, a 2023 graduate of UMHS, will be starting a dermatology research fellowship at the Center for Clinical and Cosmetic Research, affiliated with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Florida in July 2024. She will work with her mentors Dr. Brian Berman and Dr. Mark Nestor. She recently published research articles on a medication's adverse effects and a rare disease case.
Dr. Tess McClenahan on anesthesiology residency in MA
Dr. Tess McClenahan discusses her upcoming residency in anesthesiology at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. She explains that her interest in anesthesiology was influenced by her father, who was a nurse anesthetist. She describes a typical day for an anesthesiologist, which involves preparing the operating room, reviewing patient histories, administering medications, and monitoring patients during surgery.
Dr. Fatima Issa on child neurology residency in Virginia
Dr. Fatima Issa, a December 2023 graduate of UMHS, discusses her upcoming residency at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in child neurology in Richmond, VA. The Canadian native is one of the first UMHS graduates to Match in the competitive field of child neurology.

Dr. Alexander Khobeir '22 on Emergency Medicine residency in MI
UMHS Class of 2022 graduate Dr. Alexander Khobeir started an Emergency Medicine residency at McLaren Oakland Hospital in downtown Pontiac, Michigan in the summer of 2022. He spoke to the UMHS Endeavour on a break from his busy day of working in the ER in Michigan.

Dr. Carlos A. Villanueva Soto is a UMHS Class of 2023 graduate and starts an internal medicine residency at the University of Puerto Rico in Centro Médico de Puerto Rico, PR this summer.

2023 Residency Match and Class of 2023 graduate Dr. Zachary Vandeveer starts an interventional radiology residency this summer at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, MI.
