New York, NY (December 10, 2012) The University of Medicine and Health Sciences is very pleased to announce that it has been approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), enabling eligible veterans, servicepersons, and certain dependents of veterans to receive VA educational benefits. Eligible persons may receive benefits under one of several types of GI Bill:

  • Chapter 30 - Montgomery GI Bill
  • Chapter 32 - Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)
  • Chapter 33 – Post 9/11 GI Bill
  • Chapter 35 - Dependents Educational Assistance Program
  • Chapter 1606 - Montgomery GI Bill/Selected Reserve Educational Assistance Program.
  • Chapter 1607 - Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)

A decision from VA on UMHS’ eligibility for Chapter 31 - Disabled Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation Program benefits is still pending.

We encourage new VA applicants to visit the VA web site and fill out the available online application. Make sure that both the VA and the UMHS Registrar’s Office receives a copy of your paperwork. You may also need the following records:

  • Form DD 214, Report of Separation or Discharge,

Or if you are a Reservist or National Guard member,

  • Form DD 2384, Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE).

Benefits will vary by program, so it's important to visit the VA site for further details.

In conjunction with this approval, we are also announcing the formation of the Robert Ross Veterans Scholarship.  This is a needs-based scholarship that is available to veterans and servicemen and servicewomen during the Basic Science Program.  Students may be eligible up to a $1000 per semester.  We will post more details about both the scholarship program and VA benefits on our website.  Students interested in either program should contact the Office of Financial Aid ( finaid@umhs-sk.net)  and Registrar ( registrar@umhs-sk.net) for further details.

Sincerely,

Warren Ross
President
