Dr. Craig Ayre completed his B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Biochemistry at Memorial University of Newfoundland, in St. John’s, Canada. With a drive for teaching and knowledge translation, Dr. Ayre took a position as a Laboratory Instructor in Chemistry and Biology with the College of the North Atlantic – Qatar (CNA-Q), in Doha, Qatar. During his 4 years working in the Middle East, he also completed a degree in Adult and Post-Secondary Education (B.Ed.).

 

He returned to Newfoundland and joined a research program that was focused on understanding how the survival of B cells, the antibody-producing cells of the immune system, is controlled. He completed his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, with a focus in Immunology. Through this work, he published several immunology research papers describing how cell-to-cell communication organelles called extracellular vesicles are produced during B cell death.

Dr. Ayre continued his career with the Atlantic Cancer Research Center in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. Here he was part of a multi-disciplinary personalized medicine research initiative. This research was focused on finding more sensitive and personalized approaches to diagnose cancer, and provide prognosis information for these patients. During this time, Dr. Ayre also established and managed a flow cytometry research unit within this team.

 

The partnership between, education, research and a human-centric focus is central to the study and practice of medicine, and continues to be an important, and overriding concern for Dr. Ayre. At UMHS, he is professor in Cell Biology, Immunology and Genetics. Dr. Ayre is also active in the university Research committee and the student Medicine Research elective course.
