Anthony Goreczny, M.D.
Professor of Behavioral Science and Evidence-Based Medicine
Dr. Goreczny received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, PA USA) and subsequently obtained his Master of Arts degree and doctoral degree from Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA USA) after completing his internship at the Brown University Medical School Clinical Psychology Internship Consortium (Providence, RI USA).
Dr. Goreczny is a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of teaching experience and over 35 years of clinical and consulting experience in a variety of different settings. His clinical work has primarily focused in the areas of health psychology/behavioral medicine and assessment of employment readiness and fitness. He has taught a wide range of courses, including foundational courses, professional practice courses, clinically-related courses, and courses focused on statistical and scientific processes. In addition, he has supervised student research projects and student clinical training experiences.
Dr. Goreczny has maintained an active research program in areas related to health psychology and curricular assessment. His curricular research has focused on assessment of competencies, especially within the area of interprofessional education, and on problem-based learning outcomes. Within health psychology, his research has addressed eating behavior and social determinants of health as well as factors related to quality of life among individuals with an intellectual disability. He was the Principal Investigator of a series of grants related to investigating and improving the quality of life among individuals with an intellectual disability. He led the program for 25 years and oversaw about $10 million in program funding.
Dr. Goreczny has over 50 published papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has given over 100 presentations at national and international scientific conferences. In addition, he has served as a journal editor, on the editorial board of several journals, and as a peer reviewer for several journals. He has also given many invited presentations on a variety of topics and served as a representative of the American Psychological Association to the Human Genome Education Module Project. Throughout his career, Dr. Goreczny has served on many different hospital and university committees (including Institutional Review Board, Faculty Review Committee, and Interprofessional Education Committee) and was a member of governmental quality management councils as well as the American Psychological Association Continuing Education Committee (having chaired the committee for one year).
In addition to his professional activities, Dr. Goreczny has been very active in his community. He has served on the Governing Boards of several non-profit organizations, including the Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellowship Program, CLASS (Community Living and Support Services), and Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania. He also has been very active in coaching and administration of children’s sporting activities (including baseball, basketball, and softball) and assisted the Scouting organization in many different ways, including as Cubmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and District Advancement Chair.
