An exotic paradise, St. Kitts is distinguished by breathtaking natural beauty. Boasting crystalline waters, sandy soft beaches, untouched ecosystems, tropical rain forests, and a spectacular dormant volcano. St. Kitts offers something for everyone.
The welcoming climate provides for a wide range of outdoor fun, including many water-based activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, and sailing. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the various activities on the island, including golf, basketball, tennis, jogging, soccer, volley ball, flag football, and other outdoor sports. The university actively endorse intercollegiate sporting events between the universities in St. Kitts. The university has a variety of sports clubs on campus some of which are co-ed.
Hiking, Climbing and Zip-lining
St. Kitts is also a perfect setting for hiking. The trails are beautiful and range in difficulty from easy to extreme. The rainfall hikes are exceptional and provide viewers with a wide assortment of fauna. There are hiking, climbing and zip-lining opportunities for both the novice and experienced outdoorsman. Other hikes include trails to a variety of waterfalls, caves, and even a volcanic crater.
For those who love adventures, try zip-lining. You start with a short training program and then are brought up the mountain to the first staging area. There you will ride a series of zip lines that traverse various cannons, tropical rainforests, and exotic scenery that will bring you a life time of memories. It's a must for all students.
If your a history buff, Brimstone Hill is definitely worth visiting. This is an old fortress from the 16th century that was origonally built by the British. The Fort sits high on a mountain over looking the caribbean, and is a perfect location to defend St. Kitts from pirates and other advesaries. Bring your camera, the view is amazing.
The Botanical Gardens is also a must for those who are garden lovers. An incredible variety of tropical plants, palm trees, and exotic trees from Africa. Don't forget to stop at the Batik Store while you are their You will actually be able to see a live demonstration on the batik process which utilizes wax to create exotic clothing patterns. If you have a few dollars to spare, stop at their store. The clothing is unique, and will be a great addition to your caribbean wardrobe.
UMHS on Campus GYM
The university recently developed a gym which is equipped with a full range of cardio and weight training equipment including treadmills, elipticals, bikes, cybex machines, free weights, and mores. The facility is open throughout the day and evening and is maintained by a staff or professionals who are available to assist students. A variety of exercise classes are held throughout the day. Recently the university constructed a new basketball court and is planning to develop a soccer field in the near future.
The island of St. Kitts offers a diversity of culture and a treasure-trove of historic sites to explore. Sightseeing might include small towns that highlight colonial architecture, stately plantation homes, as well as quaint local shops. Special annual events feature a colorful Carnival and a Music Festival. Special events are often held at the 10,000 seat stadium built for the 2007 World Cup Cricket Games.
