Rada Alexandrescu, M.D., SFHEA, RCS

Associate Professor of Anatomy

Dr. Rada Alexandrescu graduated from the University of Medicine, Iassy, Romania with an M.D. in 1977. She passed the board examination for general surgery in 1983 and was appointed consultant General surgeon (Head of Surgery at Academic Hospital for Students).

In 1995, Dr. Alexandrescu moved with her family to South Africa, where she taught anatomy, clinical skills and emergency medicine at Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg Academic General Hospital. She developed an interest in teaching medical students, evaluating and teaching registrars, and helping the young surgical faculty. She produced many teaching materials for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and doctors, known as the ‘Alex’ guide, as an extension of ward rounds and textbook reading. Dr. Alexandrescu received the ‘Philip Tobias’ teaching prize nomination from Witwatersrand University.

In 2008, Dr. Alexandrescu moved to the UK where she was lucky to be part of many medical education and surgical teams: Queen Mary University London, Cuschieri Surgical Centre, Dundee University, Imperial College London, Aston Medical School and University of Birmingham. At Cushieri Surgical centre, Dundee University she taught basic and intermediate laparoscopic skills

Her professional memberships include Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), GMC, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGE), Member of Association of Women Surgeons (UK RCS), Associate Fellowship: Association of Surgeons of Great Britain & Ireland (ASGBI), Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), South African woman in science and engineering-Cape Town (SAWSE), and Centre of Health Science Education (CHSE).
