UMHS to Offer an Accelerated Review Program (ARP)

University of Medicine and Health Sciences – St. Kitts (UMHS) is pleased to announce the establishment of the Accelerated Review Program beginning in May 2009. The Accelerated Review Program will be offered at the UMHS campus in St. Kitts as of May 2009.

The one semester Accelerated Review Program is designed for students who have demonstrated the personal skills needed to become a physician, but who would benefit from an intensive review program prior to acceptance to UMHS. Students who succeed in the Accelerated Review Program will automatically be accepted into the UMHS basic science first semester program at the St. Kitts campus.

The Accelerated Review Program provides a unique combination of exposure to standard curriculum offered to first semester UMHS students and intensive study/learning skills

training. The academic material presented by ARP faculty will be the material used to demonstrate and teach study skills that include reading and listening for learning, concept mapping, test taking strategies, and how to participate in a successful study group.

The ARP curriculum includes:

Academic Courses:
• Physiology
• Microbiology and Immunology
• Ethics and Professionalism
• Biochemistry
• Molecular and Cell Biology and Genetics

Study Skills:
• Library/Technology Use
• Learning/Study Skills
• Interpersonal/Intrapersonal Communication
• The Basics of Medical Technology

UMHS is pleased to offer this program to its prospective students because research indicates that students who actively participate in interpersonal and academic skill development earn higher grades, achieve greater course completion, and are better able to retain knowledge gained from course work.
