UMHS Students Co-Author Article on Rare Cancer in Emergency Medicine News

Fourth-year UMHS students Andrew Victor and Sefako Phala were co-authors of an article (along with students from different med schools and an Internal Medicine physician) published in Emergency Medicine News on September 13, 2016.

The UMHS Endeavour takes a look at this great research accomplishment from two of our students.

The article, “A Mysterious Case of Back Pain,” tells the story of a 65-year-old man who was brought to the Emergency Department of a hospital via ambulance. The patient had been complaining about increasingly agonizing back pain. “His Primary Care Physician had recently prescribed NSAIDs and muscle relaxants, which failed to provide relief,” the article says.

Laboratory work and a CT scan of the thoracic and lumbar spine were ordered. While the lab work came back normal, the CT helped lead to the proper diagnosis.

After further tests, the patient was diagnosed with solitary plasmacytoma of the bone (SPB), a rare cancer.

There is good news for the man profiled in the article: “The patient is being currently treated with radiation and is expected to recover successfully,” the article said.
