Editor’s Note: We asked UMHS Soccer Captain Andrew Victor to write the following guest blog post about the UMHS vs. Windsor soccer game earlier this month.

On the evening of July 18, 2014 at Irish Town Stadium in downtown Basseterre, two teams faced off against each other, both with the hopes of representing their respective Caribbean medical schools in what has come to be a once-a-semester, winner-take-all event.

The UMHS vs. Windsor soccer game is not only a chance to relax on a Friday night and step away from the monotonous campus life late in the semester, but also an opportunity to showcase school spirit. Considering the fact that there is very little practice time in a semester to build a rapport amongst teammates, 13 committed students showed up ready to give their all against an organized Windsor side, who make it a point to maintain their training on the island. It was a difficult game, there were injuries, but above all, despite a 6-0 loss, no one ever stopped trying to win.

The attitude and commitment to each other was something that we held deep to our core and what helps us succeed not only on the field but in everything we are trying to accomplish on this island. Besides what happened on the field, it was incredible to see the fans from the school that made it a point to come out and support us. This was the real highlight of the night and at the end of the day is what really matters.

I am grateful to everyone that sacrificed their time for this event and you have no idea what it means to be able to look up and see everyone in the stands cheering us on. I am extremely proud and honored to have been able to play amongst and in front of my fellow classmates on this night, and this is not the last time we will meet Windsor on this field.

See you next semester,

Andrew Victor
