Netter’s Atlas of Neuroscience, 3rd Edition (Elsevier) , with UMHS Professor and Associate Dean of Clinical Sciences David L. Felten MD, Ph.D. as its principle author, along with M. Kerry O’Banion, M.D., Ph.D. and Mary Summo Maida, Ph.D. has been recognized by the British Medical Association (BMA) Book Awards in the “Highly Commended” category of publications for 2016.

The UMHS Endeavour looks at the significance of this award, with excerpts from the BMA review and comments from Dr. Felten. This year’s awards were held in London on September 7, 2016.

Dr. Felten told the UMHS Endeavour the annual BMA awards for each discipline are either “First Place” or “Highly Commended.” Netter’s Atlas of Neuroscience, 3rd Edition received a “Highly Commended” recognition in the Neurology category.

RAVE REVIEW FROM BMA: 'An established gem. Well worth shortlisting,' said the reviewer. Image: Amazon.comIn a stellar review published on the British Medical Association’s website on September 7, 2016, the BMA wrote that the “new edition of Netter’s Atlas of Neuroscience combines the didactic, well-loved illustrations of Dr. Frank Netter with succinct text and clinical points, providing a highly visual, clinically oriented guide to the most important topics in this subject.”

The BMA reviewer continued, “I would recommend this book without reservation and over other neuroanatomy books. The greatest strength is its beauty. Neuroanatomy can be tough. The drawings provide perspectives that are rarely seen in other textbooks and can make concepts click in your mind—a picture is worth a thousand words. The text is cleverly used to highlight rather than provide a detailed explanation which can be referenced from other books. The initial overview and then diving down into the nitty-gritty significantly aids learning as it provides a contextual road-map. The influence of the educationalist is clearly felt alongside the expertise of the anatomists. They have done Netter justice. This is an exceptional book, now in its third edition. An established gem. Well worth shortlisting. The electronic version is very welcome and makes a chunky tone accessible anywhere with the added video bonus. This is a standard publishers should be aiming for.”

Dr. Felten told the Endeavour he is thrilled about the recognition. “It is certainly the best review I have ever received,” he said. “It is most gratifying to have true professionals in medical publishing and editing acknowledge the value of the Atlas, and understand what we were trying to accomplish with the organization (Overview, Regional Neuroscience, Systemic Neuroscience), the clinical notes and commentaries, and figure legends that provided better understanding of the illustration, not just more details.”

Dr. Felten and co-author, Dr. Mary Maida (his wife), will be on the UMHS campus in St. Kitts teaching soon. Dr. Maida will teach in the Molecular Biology course. Dr. Felten will teach in the Neurosciences course.

Earlier this year, Netter’s Atlas of Neuroscience, 3rd Edition, received an Award of Merit in the Illustrated Textbook category for 2016 by the Association of Medical Illustrators.
