Nichole Cumby

Nichole Cumby

Assistant Professor of Microbiology

Dr. Nichole Cumby earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from the University of Toronto where she studied the mechanisms of virus host interactions. Her doctoral thesis led to publications in numerous peer reviewed journals and as well as an award for a talk at the 2013 international phage/virology assembly conference. Her B.Sc. (Honours) in Biochemistry and Neuroscience was completed at Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Following graduation, Dr. Cumby worked as a bench research scientist specialized in microbiology. Her first position at the University of Toronto, dealt with developing new technology to rapidly detect pathogenic bacteria in urinary tract infections. Working with a team of medical doctors and engineers, she completed proof of concept tests on a design able to detect 99% of pathogenic E. coli and 100% of pathogenic S. aureus in urine.

After completing this project, she went on to work at the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute, as a resident microbiologist, engineering the viruses used to make gene deletions in cancer cells. Her passion for mentoring and educator led her to supervise and mentor numerous students and trainees in laboratory microbiology and genetics during this time.
