On February 10, 2015, the UMHS chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association invited students of all semesters to listen in on a guest lecture held by Dr. Zain Bheriani, a physician completing her residency in Family Medicine at the University of Calgary. Dr. Bheriani completed her Basic Sciences at the Medical University of the Americas in Nevis, and is currently licensed in both the United States and in Canada. This lecture, geared towards giving students the inside scoop as to how to get back into Canada during clinical rotations and residency – proved to be just that. Within the span of sixty minutes, Dr. Bheriani drew out a road map for students, providing guidance as to what steps need to be taken in order to qualify and participate in the Canadian Match Program. Topics varying from Canadian board examinations, externships, mentorships, applications and more were discussed, all enlightening students with information of what is yet to come in our nearby futures.

The students of UMHS truly are grateful to have been given such wonderful advice from such an accomplished role model. With her goal driven attitude, Dr. Bheriani inspired all of us with her confidence, strength of character, and words of encouragement to keep our eyes on the prize and to always strive to be better. It is moments like these that remind all of us as students of how hard we must work to achieve our dreams, and yet simultaneously motivates us to continue to conquer any and every obstacle set before us. Thank you, Dr. Bheriani, for taking time out of your schedule to speak with us – we wish you all the best in the future. Finally, a special thank you to our professor and AMWA advisor, Dr. Doherty, for putting this all together for us!
