Anand Kulkarni, MBBS, MS

Professor of Anatomy

 

Dr. Anand Kulkarni is a professor of Anatomy. He has taught Histology and Gross Anatomy to medical students in the U.S. and India for more than 30 years. He received his medical education from the Government Medical College, Nagpur, India and Masters in Surgery (Human Anatomy) from IGMC, Nagpur, India.

He later pursued his post-doctoral training in Anatomy and Neurobiology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis, TN, USA and was a resident in Pathology at UTHSC for 1 year. Dr. Kulkarni later joined UTHSC as the Director of Tissue Services Core (TSC) and Assistant Professor in Anatomy, Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Dr. Kulkarni was instructor in Anatomy and Neurobiology at UTHSC, Memphis, TN USA. He also conducted histology orientation for pathology residents at UTHSC. Dr. Kulkarni taught histology and gross anatomy to dental students at UTHSC and was awarded with “Outstanding Dedication and Service Award” and “Outstanding Lecturer in D-1 histology and outstanding instructor in Neuroanatomy” by the American Student Dental Association of UTHSC.

In his most recent position before joining UMHS, He was professor and chair of Anatomy at the Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences at Kerala, India. He was Associate Professor in Anatomy at Grant Medical college, Mumbai and DY Patil Medical college, Pune, India.

As the Director of TSC at UTHSC, Dr. Kulkarni worked on multiple research projects and was part of multiple grants. His primary area of research interest is carcinoma of uncertain origin. He has multiple publications in prestigious journals such as, Clinical Cancer Research, American Journal of Surgical Pathology, Diagnostic Pathology, Anticancer Research, Oncology Letters, and Journal of Neuroscience. Currently he is working on morphological parameter of clinical importance.

During his time in Memphis, his outreach activities in greater Memphis area included organizing Nanotechnology Education: “NanoDays”, which is a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering and its potential impact on the future. He also planned the Nanotechnology Symposium: a scientific discussion platform for researchers working in the field of nanotechnology. Dr. Kulkarni created and introduced theBrain-Exhibit”, an exhibit of plastinated human brains at the Pink Palace Museum. Normal and diseased brains were used to demonstrate the effects of various disease conditions on the brain and methods for their prevention. The exhibit increased general awareness regarding the harmful effects of drugs. The exhibit enriched the knowledge of students from 5-12 grade and science teachers.

He joined UMHS in September 2019. Currently he is involved in teaching Histology, Embryology, Neurosciences and Gross Anatomy.
