New 5th Semester Campus

The University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS) is pleased to announce the formation of a Fifth Semester campus in Portland, Maine beginning September 2008. The fifth semester consists of the following required courses, Introduction to Clinical Medicine II and Biological Basis of Clinical Medicine. Maine was selected by UMHS because of its long tradition of providing quality health care and its demonstrated excellence in medical education.

The UMHS goal of excellence in medical education will be ensured by making the best in faculty and facilities available to UMHS students during their fifth semester of study. The UMHS facilities will include the latest in simulation and technology resources and a library and learning resource center. Virtual clinics utilizing human simulators will be a regular student experience.

All student clinical experiences will be conducted by a team of experienced Maine physicians, many of whom have decades of both medical practice and teaching experience. Students will be assigned to physicians in actual patient care settings at several hospitals, clinics and office health centers in and around the Portland area. The opportunity to work beside renowned Maine physicians is designed to build student clinical capabilities, increase student confidence, and enhance student performance on United States Licensing Examinations (USMLE).

UMHS is accepting applications for transfer students seeking to participate in the fifth semester program. Students seeking admission to UMHS should complete the online application available at

About the University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS): Dr. Robert Ross and University President Warren Ross bring more than 30 years’ experience to the field of medical education. They are recognized worldwide for developing academic institutions dedicated to excellence in medical education. Dr. Robert Ross is the founder and former owner of one of the largest and most prestigious caribbean medical schools.

To address the continuing personnel shortages in the medical field, Dr. Robert Ross and University President Warren Ross opened the International University of Nursing (IUON), St. Kitts in 2005. It was a natural progression to expand the St. Kitts campus to include the University of Medicine and Health Sciences (UMHS), which seated its inaugural class in May 2008.

At UMHS, the mission is to educate and nurture a new generation of physicians prepared to meet the 21st century health care delivery in a rapidly changing world. This is accomplished through innovative teaching techniques such as a 24-bed virtual hospital ward, small class sizes with individualized attention, and the use of technology to enhance instruction. The UMHS faculty is highly credentialed, and the UMHS curriculum is based on that of the best U.S. medical schools.
