As the Dean of Basic Sciences I wish to extend to each of you my warm and sincere welcome to UMHS and to St. Kitts!  We are very pleased that you have chosen to join us for this stage in your professional development. You have courageously chosen a career path that is long and arduous but eminently rewarding and worthy of every sacrifice and trial. Success here will allow you to contribute in a very real and personal way to the relief of suffering, not only for your patients but also for their loved ones. Success here will allow you to take your place among the practitioners of twenty-first century medicine. This career will take all the talent, ability and love that you can give to it but, in return, you will have a satisfying and fulfilling life along with the knowledge that you are making a difference!

Medical knowledge is ever evolving as are health care technologies and our modern health care systems.  These facts impact daily how medicine is practiced. You have made a wise choice in UMHS as I believe this is a very special institution, completely equipped to provide you with an extraordinary educational experience equal to the challenges of modern medicine.  We are fortunate to have a beautiful, technology-rich campus which includes a 24-bed virtual hospital and simulation center and a wonderful team of encouraging, engaging faculty and staff who possess a love of teaching.  We all work in harmony to develop and mentor your professional attributes throughout this unique, challenging, and unforgettable period in your lives. Over the course of your basic science education your capacities will be stretched further and you will accomplish more than you previously imagined possible. So always remember that at UMHS you are not alone. Before your arrival on campus I will know you by name; from your first steps on campus you will be acknowledged, valued and guided; going forward I will be here listening to your problems and concerns with patience and listening to your suggestions with attention.

UMHS is a relatively new and evolving medical school that determines to make the most of every opportunity to achieve ever higher levels of excellence.  As Dean, I am proud to be at the helm during this exciting time of inaugural growth and development.  As we participate together you will enjoy a happy, conviviality that affords a healthy learning environment and promotes continued mutual success. My goal is for you to be able to reminisce one day about your medical education experience and be satisfied and proud that you are an alumnus of UMHS!
