Extended Basic Science Program

The Extended Basic Science Program

UMHS developed the Extended Basic Science (EBS) Program to give students a better opportunity to excel academically by allowing participants to complete their Basic Science coursework in five semesters, rather than the standard four. Students accepted into the University may choose to enroll in this program up until a week after the first block exam in either semester one or semester two.

This is a very popular program because it gives students the necessary time to excel academically. Over 80 percent of our student body is currently enrolled in the EBS.

The Extended Basic Science Program was designed to give students a better opportunity to excel academically, and ultimately succeed, in the rigorous medical school environment.

Requirements

The admissions committee has determined that some of those admitted will be accepted directly into the EBS program. These decisions are based upon a variety of criteria that may include overall GPA, premed GPA, MCAT score, passage of time between completing the basic sciences and entering into medical school, too few advanced science courses completed at the undergraduate level, and even language issues for those who speak English as a Second Language, or some combination of these factors.

Costs

To help all students keep their education as affordable as possible, the University has prorated the tuition so that the overall cost of tuition for the five-semester EBS Program is close to the cost of the four-semester Basic Science Program. However, students in the EBS Program will have one additional semester of living expenses as compared to those in the four-semester program.

Questions about the Extended Basic Science Program?

Our admissions staff are standing by to answer any questions you may have.

Speak to admissions

Please note the following:

  • Those admitted to the EBS program or opting into the program will not be permitted to accelerate into the four semester Basic Science Program at a later date.
  • Prior to matriculation, students who choose to decelerate from the standard Basic Science Program to EBS must notify the office of admissions.
  • Those who begin the regular four semester program may opt into the EBS program following the completion of the first block examination either in the first or second semester if the results suggest that more time would be advantageous for successful completion of the basic sciences.
  • With a reduced load, students have been able to excel academically.  Currently the University has an attrition rate of 4%.  This in part is directly related to the EBS program.
  • Since the EBS tuition is slightly different than the Standard Tuition, scholarships and loan awards will be adjusted accordingly.
