About UMHS and IUON: To address the continuing personnel shortages in health professions, IUON opened its nursing school in 2005 and UMHS seated its first medical school class in 2008.
IUON offers Associate and Bachelor degrees in nursing. The IUON academic year consists of three semesters which start in January, May, and September. Students complete the first year of the ADN program and the third year of the BSN program at the IUON campus in St. Kitts, West Indies prior to transferring to complete the clinical and didactic portion of the degree at U.S. colleges affiliated with IUON. Students graduate from the U.S. partner school and are eligible to apply for the NCLEX-RN and practice nursing in the United States.
UMHS offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. The UMHS academic year consists of three semesters which start in January, May, and September. Students complete their Basic Science Program at the UMHS-St Kitts campus. Fifth semester occurs at the UMHS campus in Portland, Maine. Students complete their Clinical Science Program at teaching hospitals throughout the United States that are affiliated with UMHS. To graduate, students must complete the UMHS medical program and pass the USMLE Step1, Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS. UMHS graduates can compete for U.S. residencies and, with appropriate licensure, are able to practice medicine in the United States and Canada.
Both IUON and UMHS utilize innovative teaching techniques such as a 24-bed virtual hospital, small class sizes with individualized attention, and the use of technology to enhance instruction.
The faculty at both schools is highly credentialed and recruited primarily from the United States. They love to teach and dedicate virtually 100% of their time to students. IUON and UMHS follow traditional curriculum based on that of the best U.S. nursing and medical schools.
UMHS is an equal opportunity employer. IUON is an equal opportunity employer.
