Financial Aid Planning and Counseling

All students are advised to call or visit the Office of Financial Aid prior to matriculation, to discuss and develop a viable financial plan for their education.  After counseling and plan development, you will understand:

  1. How much money you will need, when you will need it and where you will get it from.
  2. Your credit report and how credit history affects your ability to obtain student loans.
  3. What you can do to build good credit and how debt management can help maintain your financial health.
  4. If you have outstanding student loans, this counseling would also include aggregate loan calculations which could be the most important factor when making your financial plan to attend UMHS.

Financial Aid Programs

UMHS Institutional Loan Program

UMHS developed a special loan program to help combat the increased financial need of our students created by the economic crisis in the U.S. This institutionally funded loan program is available to U.S. students, both incoming and matriculated in amounts from $1,000.00 to $5,000.00 per semester.

The interest charged on these loans is 8% fixed rate with minimum monthly interest payments required while the student is in school and during the six month grace period. This program requires a U.S. cosigner and allows repayment of principle to be deferred until 6 months after graduation. Individualized payments plans are available for those that can’t otherwise refinance the principle after the six month grace period.

Each semester, the financial aid office announcing the application process and deadline. The deadline for completed applications for the May 2011 term is April 9, 2011. UMHS Institutional Loan applications can be obtained from the Office of Financial Aid. Private Eductional Loans for U.S. Students

Due to the slow economic recovery in the U.S., many banking institutions have curtailed their educational loan portfolios.  UMHS is working to develop a loan program that will satisfy the needs of our students, allowing them to finance their entire cost of attendance.  However, at this time, the state of the economy continues to hinder our efforts.  As information becomes available, the Office of Financial Aid will send periodic email updates to all applicants and enrolled students regarding potential loan options.

Scholarships

A limited number of partial tuition scholarships in the amounts of $500.00, $750.00, and $1,000.00 per semester are awarded to students in each UMHS incoming class.  The scholarships are merit-based and award amounts are determined by the strength of the student’s previous academic record as recorded in their admissions application.  All accepted students are automatically considered and reviewed for institutional scholarship funds. No additional application is required.  As long as the student is making satisfactory academic progress, the scholarship continues throughout the student's basic science curriculum.

UMHS also offers two scholarships to citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis. Students interested in applying for the Kittitian scholarship should contact the Human Resource Management Department, Office of the Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis. Canadian Credit-Based Loans

Most major banks in Canada offer students studying outside Canada a student line of credit. These educational lines of credit are specifically designed to fund the costs associated with the student’s studies.

For students studying outside of Canada, most lenders require students to have a credit worthy cosigner in order to obtain an approval. Approvals are made at the discretion of the local branch where the application is submitted. Thus, students are advised to apply at the location they and/or their cosigners conduct most of their banking transactions.

Credit-based loans and lines of credit are typically approved for students, and their cosigners who have a good credit rating. The brochure titled Financial Aid Options for Canadian Students provides a list of some of the Canadian banks that offer student loan programs for which you may be eligible to apply.

At this time the Provincial Canadian Student Loan Programs are not available to students attending UMHS. In accordance with Canadian law, an international medical school must be in operation for ten years before an application can be submitted and a federal code assigned to process loans. (The UMHS Charter Class matriculated in May 2008.) We are confident that UMHS otherwise meets the requirements of the Canadian Student Loan Program.
